Visiting Writers

NMU’s Visiting Writers Program has been proud to host Tom Bissell, Roxane Gay, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Kwame Dawes, John D’Agata, Richard Ford, Tim O’Brien, Lan Samantha Chang, Elizabeth McCracken, John McNally, Nahid Rachlin, Jim Harrison, Donald Hall, and Mary Clearman Blew, among others.

In 2013-2014, the Visiting Writers Program brought Joseph Bates, Karen Thompson Walker, and Jonathan Johnson to campus. MFA and MA students joined these guests for meals during their visits and invited them into composition classes and graduate workshops. Readings are held in NMU’s University Center and are free and open to the public.

The English Department is also influential in choosing a One Book, One Community selection and hosting a fall visit by the author. Graduate students have the opportunity to sit on the One Book, One Community committee and to participate in author events. Recent writers include Karen Thompson Walker, Elena Gorokhova, Aleksandar Hemon, Mary Doria Russell, Tim O’Brien and Jonathan Safran Foer.
